Former US President Donald Trump, already facing federal criminal charges for acts allegedly committed before during and after his presidency, has now been indicted on state-level election interference charges.
Details from VOA Chief National Correspondent Steve Herman in Washington.
A grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, on Monday evening returned a 41-count indictment alleging Donald Trump and 18 others conspired to try to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Trump is charged with 13 felony counts, including violations of Georgia's racketeering act and conspiracy to commit forgery.
Others charged include members of Trump's White House staff, his 2020 presidential campaign and officials of his justice department.
The indictment also references 30 unindicted co-conspirators who are not named.

North Korea says a US soldier who bolted into the North, across the heavily-armed Korean border last month, did so after being disillusioned at the inequality of American society.
Private second class Travis King entered North Korea while on tour of a Korean border village, becoming the first American detained in the North in nearly five years.
US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday he and First Lady Jill Biden will visit Hawaii as soon as they can to survey the Maui wildfire damage.
He said he doesn't want his presence to interrupt recovery and clean-up efforts.
I’ve spoken to Governor Josh Green multiple times and reassured him the state will have everything it needs from the federal government.
He offered his thoughts and prayers to the people of Hawaii and pledged that, quote, “every asset they need will be there for them.”
